Holiday photos unleashed in Huntington Beach, California

If it's the 4th of July in Huntington Beach, expect crowds. Starting in 2004 the city shot fireworks off the Huntington Beach Pier for its centennial 100th birthday celebration. Since then the crowds have continued to grow on an annual basis.

Patriotism shines

4th of July is a holiday that's so easy to photograph if you can stand the crowds and you are looking for people shots. In Huntington Beach you can see the picture shows an audience preparing for late afternoon sunsets -- and then fireworks free displays.

Huntington Beach prior to 2004 had a pay-per-view fireworks display funded by tickets at the gate. But Huntington Beach High School where the event was held across for HB City Hall had to redo their field one summer and the fireworks needed a new home. Why not the beach? One problem was that you can't charge for people to see such a display over the Pacific Ocean. So the 4th of July Parade committee was put to the task of funding the event.

They created a vendor showcase at the pier, charging vendors for the rights to sell hot dogs and other items to millions of visitors. Over 10 years later the fireworks display is something the public has come to expect. In fact, the city legalized California safe and sane fireworks, as well.

Technical info about this photo. While the picture of the crowd is nothing special in terms of content and composition, it shows a holiday example, and also exemplifies the concept of a picture with a larger file size due to the amount of detail in the image. Simple silhouettes and scenes tend to be much smaller files. You can use the information to your advantage when you are illustrating something with pictures and faster download times are required. Stick with fewer people, less colors and broad expanses of sameness if your goal is to lessen your KBs.

Start before sunset.

If you scout out a photo opportunity where there are plenty of unique homes lit for the holidays you'll know exactly when the lights come on. If you can catch some scenes before the sun goes down, you'll enjoy the colored skies before dark.

Sports Photography

Most beach sports photographers don't make a full time living in the trade, but they do have fun. Some of the best surf photographers, for instance, are surfers, themselves.
