You may get lucky and catch the fading sun and brilliant sky. Unfortunately we're at the mercy of timing which depends on when the artificial lighting comes on.

Places to see holiday-lit piers

Huntington Beach and Seal Beach both string up lights or snowflake shapes. Other piers such as Pismo Beach and Belmont Pier in Long Beach have lit, artificial trees visible in the night.

Start before sunset.

If you scout out a photo opportunity where there are plenty of unique homes lit for the holidays you'll know exactly when the lights come on. If you can catch some scenes before the sun goes down, you'll enjoy the colored skies before dark.
